About Daniel Island, South Carolina
Daniel Island's name was originally derived in 1740 from the governor of the Carolina colony, Robert Daniel. Harry Frank Guggenheim, a New York businessman and philanthropist, bought the island as a residence in 1947. His family farmed the land and raised cattle here on the island until his death in 1971. The Island was then turned over to the Guggenheim Foundation and put into trust. In 1997 the land was sold to the Daniel Island Company which began plans to develop the Island under guidelines set forth by the Guggenheim Foundation.
Today, Daniel Island has become an extraordinary island town. The community spirit here
is like no other and the vision of the developer is unmatched.
